IC Engine || Internal Combustion Engine

IC engine stands for Internal Combustion Engine. It is a type of heat engine that converts the chemical energy stored in fuel into mechanical energy through a series of combustion processes occurring inside the engine. These engines are widely used in various vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, trucks, and boats.

The operation of an IC engine involves the following basic steps:

  1. Intake: The engine draws in a mixture of fuel (typically gasoline or diesel) and air through the intake valve or port.
  2. Compression: The piston moves upward, compressing the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber. This compression raises the temperature and pressure of the mixture.
  3. Combustion: A spark plug ignites the compressed mixture, causing it to burn rapidly. The combustion produces a high-pressure and high-temperature gas.
  4. Power: The expanding gases push the piston downward, converting the thermal energy of the combustion into mechanical work. This work is transferred to the crankshaft, which rotates as a result.
  5. Exhaust: The piston moves upward again, expelling the exhaust gases created during combustion through the exhaust valve or port.

The process repeats in a cycle, known as the four-stroke cycle, which consists of intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust strokes. In a four-stroke engine, each stroke requires two complete revolutions of the crankshaft.

IC engines can be further classified into two types: spark-ignition (SI) engines and compression-ignition (CI) engines. SI engines, also known as gasoline engines, use a spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture. CI engines, also known as diesel engines, compress the air in the cylinder to a high enough temperature and pressure that it ignites the injected fuel without a spark plug.

IC engines have played a crucial role in transportation and power generation for many years. However, alternative technologies, such as electric vehicles, are gaining popularity due to environmental concerns and the need for more sustainable energy sources.
